When most people hear “community college,” they assume it’s plan B.
A backup.
Something you settle for.

But for me? It was the best decision I ever made.

Backstory: Not What I Expected

I didn’t grow up imagining I’d go to community college in New Hampshire. Like many Nepali students, my first goal was med school. When that didn’t happen—and when COVID added two unexpected years of pause—I was lost.

I eventually applied to the University of New Hampshire and got in. But then I noticed a community college five minutes away from my family. Tuition was lower. The environment felt manageable. And honestly, I just needed a place to start.

So I chose NHTI: New Hampshire Technical Institute.

And no, it didn’t feel like “settling.” It felt like starting smart.

The Truth About Community College

Let’s clear something up:
Community college isn’t easy. It’s not a shortcut. It’s not a step down.

What it is, is this:
A place where you can explore what you really want to study
A space to adjust to U.S. academic life
A financially smarter option for many international students
And honestly? A hidden gem if you know how to make the most of it

I majored in Information Technology & Software Development.
I earned a certificate in Mindful Communication.
I worked as a student ambassador, RA, peer counselor, and even joined student senate.

I didn’t just pass through. I showed up—and it paid off.

I Became the Commencement Speaker

When I graduated after two years, I was asked to speak at our commencement.
I stood in front of hundreds of students, families, and faculty—sharing my story, my doubts, and how this small school helped me find direction again.

That moment? It proved something to me:
It doesn’t matter where you start. It matters how you show up.

For Every Nepali Student Considering This Path

If you’re in Nepal thinking, “Should I apply to a community college?”
Or you’re already here and wondering, “Is this even worth it?”

Here’s what I’ll say:

  • Yes, it’s worth it. You’ll save money, gain clarity, and grow.

  • Yes, you’ll transfer. (I’m now at Suffolk University in Boston finishing my bachelor’s degree.)

  • Yes, you’ll thrive. If you take initiative, community college will open doors you didn’t even know existed.

And no—you’re not behind. You’re not less than. You’re building your foundation.

Your Journey = Your Power

I’m proud I took the community college path.
It taught me how to lead. How to listen. How to restart.

So if that’s where your story begins, I hope you know—
You’re not just taking a different road.
You’re building something powerful.

And someday, you might be the one standing at graduation, mic in hand, realizing:
“This path made me who I am.”
